Does joining JROTC mean that I will have to make a commitment to joining the actual military someday?
Absolutely not! JROTC, by no means, implies a commitment to the actual military; however, many cadets find JROTC a great opportunity to develop their leadership skills and to serve their community in training for their future desired military career. I heard cadets have to do mandatory physical fitness. Is this true? Three years of JROTC will exempt you from fulfilling your PE/Health credit in high school. We do PT every Friday which generally consists of the flight commanders leading the cadet through exercises like push ups, sit ups, sprints, etc and sports like football and basketball. If a cadet is unable to participate due to health reasons (asthma, injuries, etc), they are not required to participate in PT; however, cadets are encouraged to stay active in our core and the PT goes towards their participation in the class. Do I have to pay for the uniform? We are very fortunate that we do not have to pay for our uniform. The uniforms issued to cadets are very expensive and all cadets have to pay is a $20 cleaning fee at the beginning of the year. However, if items are lost or damaged beyond repair, there may be a replacement fee. Do I have to wear the uniform every single day? No. Our designated uniform day is every Thursday of the week. Uniform wear is a vital part of your grade. Not wearing your uniform can severely injure your grade in JROTC. I missed a uniform day, can I make it up? Absolutely. Our make up policy is extremely lenient. If you wear your uniform anytime before the next uniform day, our instructors will add the uniform points back to your grade. **However, if you were absent on a uniform day, this will not count against your grade and there is no need to make it up. What is staff? Our staff is comprised of a select group of cadets who are the officers of the corps. They are the ones who organize the events and lead the corps. Do I have to be involved in every single extracurricular to be able to apply for a staff position? Not necessarily, but the more you are involved and the more you show your leadership skills, the higher your chance of earning a staff position. I'm a freshman. Can I apply for staff? Freshmen are not allowed to apply for staff during their first semester in JROTC. This is mainly due to lack of experience and knowledge; however, freshmen are welcome to apply for a staff position (usually flight commander) at the start of their second semester in JROTC. |
